Merseyway Shopping Centre in Stockport, Greater Manchester undertook a major renovation as part of a broader town centre regeneration program, focused on transforming the area into a vibrant hub for community, culture and innovation. As part of the project, the public washrooms were completely overhauled and transformed into a modern, hygienic and inviting space.

Working in close collaboration with the M&E Dodd Group, we were engaged to value engineer the original specification, ensuring it aligned with the project’s budgetary constraints. Hygiene and durability were the top priorities in the design brief developed by AEW Architects. The facilities had to withstand heavy footfall while supporting the highest standards of hygiene for visitors. Alongside these practical demands, the brief also called for a high-end aesthetic that aligned with the overall architectural vision.

With hygiene as a top priority, our Mirror Box Units offered the perfect all-in-one wash station solution. Designed for both functionality and style, each unit features touch-free soap dispensers and integrated hand dryers, ensuring a contactless, hygienic user experience.

The Mirror Box Units are paired with press-action taps with automatic shut-off, helping to significantly reduce water consumption in line with the project’s sustainability goals. For added style and usability, the Mirror Box Units are finished with sleek white LED backlighting and intuitive icons, guiding users effortlessly while enhancing the contemporary design.

To meet the demands of the U-shaped and L-shaped washroom arrangements, we adapted our Solid Surface WT1 Sloping Thermoformed Wash Trough, incorporating extended bag shelves to accommodate the layout across both male and female washrooms.

Solid Surface was the ideal material choice for this application, combining performance with aesthetic appeal. Its non-porous and seamless nature makes it exceptionally hygienic, as there are no joints or crevices where dirt or bacteria can accumulate, an essential feature in hightraffic public washrooms. The material is also highly durable, capable of  withstanding daily wear and tear while maintaining its sleek appearance over time. In addition, it is easy to clean and maintain,  supporting long-term upkeep with minimal effort.

Accessibility was also a key design priority, particularly for younger users. To meet this need, we supplied our Solid Surface VT4 Vanity Top, fully customised to a bespoke toddler-height specification. Each vanity unit featured integrated Solid Surface Basins, resulting in a completely seamless design that eliminates joins and gaps where germs might accumulate. This not only enhances hygiene but also simplifies daily cleaning and maintenance. The lower profile made handwashing more accessible for children, aligning with inclusive design standards and enhancing the overall user experience for families.

The design team selected a Concrete Grey Solid Surface finish for both the wash troughs and vanity tops, delivering a contemporary yet timeless appeal. Underpanels were specified in Natural Oak, with a Gunmetal Grey frame to strike the perfect balance between industrial styling and natural warmth.
