Solid Surface – A Designer’s Dream for Style and Durability

Solid surface is a designer’s dream – it has limitless décor applications and has boundless ability in terms of its colour and design. On top of this, solid surface is incredibly stylish, while also being more durable and more affordable than traditional stone alternatives.

Here at The Washroom Vanity Company, we pride ourselves on being solid surface experts. We are committed to providing you with the most suitable solid surface products for your washroom projects. Not convinced on solid surface yet? Let us show you why it is a designer’s dream material!

Durability

We understand that as a designer, you can’t only consider form, but also need to consider functionality. Solid surface is the ideal material to create stunning environments, without compromising on durability.

Solid surface is a man-made raw material, created from a blend of acrylic resin, polyester resin, or a combination of both, with colour pigments and natural minerals. As a result, its compact, non-porous polymer composites ensure that solid surface is incredibly durable. Solid surface is highly resistant to wear and tear, but we understand that usage can build up over time. Any signs of wear that appear on solid surface over long periods of time can easily be repaired. In fact, it can easily be repaired back to like new condition. In comparison to more expensive, traditional stones, such as marble, quartz and granite, solid surface is much more durable and therefore, less resistant to chipping, meaning solid surface wash troughs and vanities can be restored rather than replaced.

Additionally, from a hygiene and cleaning perspective, solid surface is a non-porous material, unlike traditional stones. This stops bacteria and mould from penetrating the surface. It can also stop staining on the surface, allowing your vanity, wash trough or superloo to stay in pristine condition for longer.

Seamless Design and Thermoforming Abilities

One key design benefit of solid surface is the fact that it has seamless joints. Sheets of solid surface can easily be joined in any configuration, without any visible seams and gaps, leaving a perfectly smooth, continuous surface. Integrated solid surface wash basins can be coupled with solid surface vanities, for a completely seamless solid surface solution.

Additionally, solid surface has thermoforming abilities. The chemical properties and composition of solid surfaces means that it can be heated in a thermoforming oven until it becomes pliable. It can then be moulded into intricate shapes and designs, either by clamping the surface into place or using a mould or thermoforming press. This is ideal for designers because your possibilities are endless!

Solid surface has boundless applications; it can be used for vanity units, wash troughs, superloos, as well as other bespoke solutions including shelving, benching and more. Its thermoforming ability means that solid surface can be used to create contemporary design shapes in washrooms, such as rounded and smoothed edges, that are not always viable when using traditional stones. Solid surface is truly the pinnacle of versatile design.

Aesthetics

Last but not least, solid surface is stunning. Designers always consider the aesthetics of a project alongside its functionality, and as we’ve said – solid surface is the perfect choice to meet both of these needs. As solid surface is coloured by adding pigments, the variety of colours and patterns that are available are virtually endless, including elegant finishes such as marble and terrazzo. With such a vast colour pallet available, trends can be matched or traditional tones partnered.

On top of this, the addition of pigments means that there is no colour variance between one piece of solid surface and the next allowing for continuity between areas and even projects, which is often not the case with traditional stones, where colours can vary from piece to piece. This, paired with its flawless design and ability to be used for different surfaces, means that solid surface can create a truly seamless washroom solution.

Solid surface can easily comply with an environment’s needs without compromising on the aesthetic. For example, stainless steel is great for creating a clean and sterile environment, but may not always look the most appealing. That is where solid surface and its non-porous properties come in, with no place for bacteria and mould, and no seams for dirt to collect in, all while looking beautiful.

Solid surface is incredibly versatile, it can easily be used in an understated manner, or it can be used to create a statement piece – the choice is all yours.
